Jack Nott

All work and no play
Makes Jack a dull boy

About Jack Nott

Full name: Johnathan Ketch Nott
Birthdate and age: 1 November, 1926 // 60
Sexual orientation: Heterosexual, but technically closer to Aesexual. He only married so he could have an heir and his only enjoyment in the act of sex is exerting his dominance.
Occupation: Obliviator. Jack's special talent is mind manipulation magic (including Legilemency, Occlumency, Obliviation and Imperius). He went into becoming an Obliviator because it allowed him almost unrestricted access to messing with peoples memories. It's his favourite form of torture. What could be more fun than instead of simply modifying a memory, removing all the memories from the year you were seven? Or all the memories of your child's second birthday? Your first kiss? Maybe even the way your first love smelled? Besides, physical torture and the activity of performing it is far too messy and plebeian. Jack prefers the elegant and elite form of mental torture.

Alumnus: Slytherin 1937-1944
Bloodline: Pureblood, one of the oldest English ones. He can trace his family back 10 generations.
Hometown and current residence: The village of Crondall in the North East of Hampshire, England in the Hart district. The Notts have been here since the early 1500s back when the village was still in the hands of monks.

Family:
Father Archibald Ferris Nott - Archibald (never Archie) served on the Wizengamot. He was stoic, silent, believed that inferiors should be seen and not heard. He died in 1935 when Jack was 9 of a heart attack.
Mother Daphne Elena Nott - Daphne was the perfect trophy wife. Stately, Pureblooded, beautiful, and silent. She served on the boards of numerous charities and Jack can barely remember her despite her living till he was 40 (she died in 1966 of dragonpox).
Wife Analeigh Hester Nott, nee Gamp - Analeigh was 18 when she was married to Jack who was already 52. It was a marriage arranged by Analeigh's father and Jack himself soon after Analeigh was born. Jack had needed a wife, breeding was important, and so he hand picked the exact family he wanted his wife to come from when he was 32 years old and waited patiently for them to produce a daughter. Once they had, he swooped in and was too compelling to be refused. Analeigh was his before she reached her first birthday. Jack was very involved in her life from then on, determined that his wife would be raised perfectly. She took the classes he picked, joined only the clubs or activities he approved of, associated with classmates he deemed worthy enough and above all grew up with the notion and understanding that he owned her. Analeigh never new freedom or anything other than asking Jack for permission for everything she did. She never learned how to Apparate. The two were married only a month after she left Hogwarts, 30 June, 1978. Two years later she gave birth to their only child, a boy named Theodore, and then Analeigh died six years later. The official ruling is that she tripped over a house elf coming down the stairs - the offending house elf confessed and was promptly executed by Jack. No one thought to ask four year old Theodore who saw his father throttle his 6 months pregnant mother and throw her down the stair case in one of his drunken fits.
Children Theodore Archibald Nott - Unfortunately for Theodore he takes after his father in looks and mother in personality. At only six years old he is already showing signs of being thin, weedy, and reticent. Though this might be in part to his father's continued abuse on his mind and psyche. Since Theodore was born Jack has regularly invaded his mind to determine things like whether he was crying because he was hungry or just to cry. Later it was whether or not he was lying and occasionally just to see if the boy could stop him. Theodore is even Imperiused once in awhile just for Jack's amusement. When Theodore was four he witnessed his father murder his mother and unborn sister and knew he could never let anyone know. He promptly blocked the details out, and his only memories of the incident is his mother's screams and the way she looked at the bottom of the stairs. So it is no surprise that Theodore is far from a normal child. He doesn't laugh, he doesn't smile, and he has little to no social skills. His only friends are those handpicked by his father and even them Theodore holds at a distance, preferring not to get close to anyone. After all, he was very close to his mother - his only protection from his father - and she was taken from him. So he's sure anything else he loves will be too.
Personal background:
Birth and Childhood
Johnathan Ketch Nott didn't cry when he was born. That was the first thing that puzzled the midwife. No matter how much she smacked the baby's rump, he didn't cry. Eventually he let out an almost strangled shout, but then went back to stoic silence. His mother was vaguely concerned, but his father Archibald considered it the best possible scenario. His son, despite being a newborn, was a man. He took pain and he didn't wail at the slightest provocation. Throughout his infancy Jack never cried. He never had need to. He had wetnurses and house elves who saw to his every need like clockwork and anticipated what he needed before the child had cause to be fussy. Jack became used to the feeling of entitlement this provided. He learned to walk at seven months and spoke his first word ('you') at eight months, but didn't take much to talking just as he resisted crying. However, when the occasion called for it he would speak, proving he could. He just preferred not to.

This meshed perfectly with his father's ideals that one should be seen and not heard unless addressed. In fact, Archibald saw little in his son that caused him any concern aside from Jack's queer habit of accidentally killing every pet he happened to own as soon as it displeased him. However Archibald just chalked this up to Jack wanting and expecting perfection and deemed this an acceptable quality for a nine year old to have. Of course, Archibald died before Jack's 10th birthday and never got to see the man his acceptable son turned into.

Hogwarts
When Jack entered Hogwarts he was immediately placed in Slytherin, like most males in his family. He soon met Tom Riddle who was placed there not long after him. Jack immediately recognized Tom as the type of boy that would lead and take control and slid easily into his trusted circle. Jack didn't bother trying to flatter or charm Tom, he simply proved himself someone that would be of benefit to have close. Throughout Hogwarts Jack maintained that relationship with Tom. Not a friendship, since neither boy was the type to trust or like anyone enough to call them a friend, but there was a wordless understanding among them. As long as Tom was the leader, Jack would serve him. It was from Tom that Jack first began to learn of Legillemency and Occlumency, as Tom would often practice on Jack and Jack began to practice closing his mind. Since he would never dream to practice Legillemency on Tom himself, he began to practice on younger students who couldn't refuse him.

For the most part Jack was an exemplary student. He wasn't tops at hands on work like Potions or Herbology, taking a shining to Defense and Charms instead. He became a member of the Slug Club at first because of his continued association with Tom and Horace being dear friends with his father, but became a member in his own right as he progressed further in Hogwarts and his talents manifested more. In fact, it was Slughorn's testimony on Jack's character which got him off on charges of using Dark Magic on two Muggleborn Hufflepuff girls. He had, of course, but really the only person who needed to know that was Tom, though several professors suspected.

Adulthood, Marriage, and Becoming a Widower
After leaving Hogwarts, Jack took Slughorn up on his contacts and was able to easily secure a spot in Obliviation training. He proved a natural at it, his skills in Occlumency and Legillemency giving him an added advantage in the field. Before long he finished his training at the top of his class and entered into the field with a license to erase peoples memories.

When Jack was 32 his mother, for the first time exerting any sort of opinion, declared he needed to think about marriage and producing an heir. Jack had never really thought of marriage before, as he viewed women only slightly more tolerable than Mudbloods no matter their blood. They were only things that needed to be shown their place, by whatever means necessary. Resigning himself to the fact that a wife was required in producing a legitimate heir, Jack carefully studied family trees and decided on one. The Gamps were an old line, but not wealthy or influential enough to be able to refuse his offer of giving him their next daughter. Two years later Analeigh Hester Gamp was born and her life was signed away in a flurry of galleons and status.

Jack was 52 when he married Analeigh in a lavish ceremony befitting someone of his station. But one the wedding night failed to produce an heir Jack became concerned. His concerns were valid and Analeigh had an exceedingly difficult time getting pregnant. And when she did, staying pregnant was next to impossible. She had two miscarriages before she finally gave birth to Theodore Archibald Nott two years and three months after their marriage.

As far as Jack was concerned, his work was done. And aside from stumbling in drunk and finding Analeigh contrary and needing to be put in her place, he ignored his wife. This was fine with Analeigh since she doted upon her son with everything in her. For once she had something that was hers. Of course, when Jack would barrel into the boys mind she would shriek and protest and try to stop her husband which always resulted in an awful punishment for her, but Analeigh was becoming increasingly more mutinous. A latent teenage rebellion forming too late.

When she discovered she was pregnant again, Analeigh began making plans to leave - determined not to let another child of hers be abused like her son. It took five months of planning until she was confident she could leave. She hadn't counted on her Healer running into Jack at the club and asking how the pregnancy was going. Jack came home in a drunken rage, convinced that the child couldn't possibly be his, finding Analeigh and Theodore at the top of the stairs with suitcases in hand. After brutally tearing through her mind to figure out who the father was, he began to rip memories of Theodore from her mind in an effort to punish her for tying to take his heir away. Analeigh tried to fight. Laughing, Jack pushed her violently down the large stone staircase and watched her fall. He never saw Theodore hiding in the shadows, watching the entire incident. He has been able to see Thestrals ever since.

By the time the authorities came Jack had already altered one of the elf's memories so it believed that Analeigh had tripped over her and - pregnant and clumsy - had been unable to steady herself before falling to her death. Unwilling to grapple with someone as close to Voldemort as Jack was, the elf's story was accepted as fact and as the elf's master Jack was given leave to punish the elf as he saw fit. And in that instant he was a single parent.

Becoming a Death Eater
In 1955, when Jack was 29, he became one of the first Death Eaters. Taking the mark without protest, as if it was always expected of him. His position as an Obliviator and his skills at mind manipulation and control proved valuable assets to Tom - by this time Voldemort - and Jack was the source of countless Imperius curses and memory charms. He was the silent black hand who moved in front of Voldemort, clearing an easy path for him to seize control. If someone opposed Voldemort and the Death Eaters, and Voldemort wanted them alive and for some reason not Imperiused, they were given to Jack to interrogate and break. With tactics similar to a Dementor, Jack would delve into the person's mind, obliviating pleasant memories and replacing them with horrific mutations until the person agreed to cooperate.

Jack relished being feared and respected, but he knew enough about dictators to know that they never last. So Jack kept out of the spotlight his other Death Eaters relished. His name was never known, he never bandied about his mark, and his excuses were that if people didn't know who he was then when he came to Obliviate or Imperius them their defenses would be lower. Of course this didn't exactly make him trustworthy. Having known Jack since they were 11, Voldemort knew exactly what Jack would do should the political climate change and this knowledge didn't endear him to him more. Jack was pushed closer to the outskirts and kept easily in the background where he continued to enjoy the behind-the-scenes work he was so good at. And then, as expected, things changed.

Becoming a Black Cap
When the coup took place and Voldemort was imprisoned with Grindelwald seizing control, Jack held up his end of his understanding with Tom from the beginning. He became Grindelwald's man, and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who honestly believes he was never always loyal to Grindelwald. In July of 1984 when Grindelwald offered any Death Eater to come over, Jack didn't even look back as he slipped unnoticed over the line to Grindelwald's side.

Still untrustworthy in the longevity of Dictators, Jack keeps from parading his status as a Black Cap through the streets, and instead feeds his addictions behind the scenes. And Merlin help the muggle or muggleborn who crosses his path when boredom strikes and alcohol hasn't quenched it. Through this he is able to quietly commiserate with those who are unhappy with the situation, charming them into trusting him so he is able to have them in his pocket in case he needs to use them. Because that's how Jack gets people. He listens to them, letting them spill their heart out to him as they believe there's finally someone who cares. Meanwhile, he never reveals much of anything about himself, and lies with a smile.

Appearance: Jack is tall and thin with a heavy brow over eyes that burn and a jaw that isn't as strong as it could be. To cover up that weakness, Jack will often grow a beard or a goatee. His face is lined from age, and his dark hair is shot through with gray. Clothing wise he favors professional clothes of high quality, the sort that make his shoulders broader and waist trimmer and allow him to pose an imposing figure. He's the sort of man you notice. When he smiles or laughs he is a good enough actor to make it look easy and natural which he uses to his advantage in putting other people at ease. When first meeting Jack it is easy to forget his reputation or anything you might have heard, because it's hard to reconcile the charming gentleman with the booming laugh and quick wit with the stories you've heard and immediately suspect them to be false.

Personality: One word: Sociopath. Jack is practically the poster child for antisocial personality disorder. He will lie through his teeth, but with such charisma and charm that you can't help but believe him. It's his excelled ability to read peoples emotions perfectly that enables him to mold their minds as well as he can - both figuratively in the sense that he can manipulate them, and literally in the sense that he can slide into their minds almost unnoticed and tamper with it. That isn't to say that the smooth and calculating exterior doesn't occasionally give into the psychopath within. Nott had several instances in Hogwarts where he was under scrutiny for using Dark Magic on younger and more defenseless Muggleborn students. He was never convicted, and as he got older he learned to control his more violent tendencies and lash out in other, more subtle ways.

Jack also has a problem with alcohol and narcotics. He's a chain smoker and a near alcoholic. He doesn't waste his time on plebeian alcohols like beer, and he only drinks the most expensive top shelf liquors. But to excess. And when he does he is an angry, violent, and sometimes deadly drunk. Jack has been on trial for the deaths of two muggleborn wizards which occurred at a bar but was able to get off due to lack of evidence. Also, as stated above, he was suspected but never charged in the death of his late wife, Analeigh.

Why he drinks is another piece in his psychological puzzle. He first started drinking to alleviate his boredom. Jack detests being bored and idle. He gets restless and needs something occupy himself with. As a pureblood male, drinking at various upscale private members-only clubs was an expected distraction. He just takes it to excess. He continues to drink because of a persistent agitation that gives way to depression at times. Unwilling to admit to any sort of flaw like depression, Jack covers it up with drinking.

Because of his agitation and dislike of boredom, Jack has tendencies toward impulsive and almost reckless decisions. Not just for himself, but he often convinces other people into potentially deadly situations with him. He's into extreme sports like Dragon racing, Hippogriff wrestling, and broom diving (jumping from a high distance while holding a broom in one hand and waiting till the last possible moment to slide onto the broom and avoid the ground). He's also routinely careless with his son, Theodore. He treats him like an adult despite the boy being only six years old. He leaves him for alone with just house elves for long periods of time, and then takes him with him to his Members clubs or on Obliviation missions. He also regularly invades Theodore's mind in order to force his son to protect it. Despite him being six. When Theodore chances to disobey or misbehave, Jack punishes him like an adult - with mind control.

Despite the mental abuse he extols to, well, everyone he possibly can, Jack doesn't see it as wrong. Or as anything he should be ashamed for. In his mind if they are weak enough to be susceptible to mind manipulation than they deserve whatever he is able to do to them. Because of his superior skill in mind control he believes that gives him the right to extol his power how he sees fit. He wouldn't retain his talent if he didn't practice, after all. Because of this careless attitude towards his treatment of others, Jack doesn't have friends. He has admirers, he has underlings, he has people who fear him and a very slim few who know him well enough to respect or hate him depending on their own morals.

Affiliation and reasoning: Jack is loyal only to himself and his own best interests. Not to whichever Master he is serving, not to his country and government, and not to his son or family. Just himself. When he met Tom in Hogwarts it was in his best interest to go along with him, when Tom became Voldemort and desired to conquer the world... Jack followed him without hesitation. When Grindelwald seized control, Jack went along with it. As of now he's outwardly loyal to Grindelwald, but still keeps his feet in with the Death Eaters... just in case. Jack has a lot of just in cases.
Purity beliefs: Pure to the bone marrow. There just isn't question, really. Marrying someone who isn't of purely magical blood is like marrying a dog or a house elf. Disgusting.

I am not Jack Nott. Nott belongs to JK Rowling. I am also not Jeremy Irons. He belongs to England.
